Tripitas in Canuts!
Growing up, I've lived on the West side of El Paso. Those of you not from El Paso, there's a West, East, Lower Valley, and Northeast side. But just outside of El Paso is a little tiny town called Canutillo. Pronounced "Cahn-noh-theeyo." I have lots of family from Canutillo, and as an adult, I myself reside in good old Canuts (pronounced "cah-noots")! It has a population of just over 6,300 and is only 2.9 sq. miles. You'll find sights like this:
But one of the greatest features I personally enjoy about Canutillo are the tiny little....well, I don't really know what to call them. They're not quite restaurants, and they're not quite food stands. But Canutillo is filled with some great eateries! One of my faves is called "Tacos y Gorditas Garcia" located at 6720 Doniphan Dr. If you're making a day trip to the mall, skp the Hot-Dog-on-a-Stick and drive down Talbot to this little gem.
This is actually one of me and my husband's first dates. After a good day of hanging and chillin ::wink::, we got hungry ::wink:: and went for some food. My husband is originally from Houston, and although he is white, he's much more Mexican than I, and I actually forced him to order. The woman taking our order had a limited English vocabulary. Luckily "tripitas" and "tacos" and "burritos" is pretty universal. As he was pulling out his wallet to pay, she smiled at me. You know, that "I get you and what's happening smile."
I went to the car as it was getting pretty chilly, and my husband paid and got our food. He came back in with this big goofy smile and the lady taking care of us asked him, and a thick Spanish accent, "You are in love?" And his response: "Yes, muy in love."
Love & dork of my life. They accept him as their own at any Mexican restaurant!
I know, I know! Best story ever, right? But let's get over that and talk about their food. They have a pretty great variety at pretty affordable prices, especially the burritos. Only .99 for a basic burrito, but they pack it in pretty good!
My favorite is actually the Tacos Tripitas. If you don't know what tripitas are....try them first and then look it up. Trust me! It's never a pretty story, but it's always delicious!
They serve four tacos for $5, and it includes some cilantro, onion, limes, and green salsa on the side.
For only .99 I have to order a Papas Con Chorizo burrito! And my husband loves the Chicharron burrito (although he claims it's not spicy enough, but he did eat it in about three bites, so it must've been good!).

A Mexican food stand would not be complete without an array of Aguas Frescas! It's Saturday, which means Beer-turday! Yes, I did just make that up! But, here at Casa de Avila-Consford, we enjoy to add citrus flavors to our beers, but it has to be Mexican beers (Coronas, Tecates, Dos XX's, Sol, etc.). I ordered the Limon and poured some into my beer, with a squeeze of lime, and a splash of pineapple juice.
Perfection!
If you're planning on stopping by here, they're open until 10:00 PM and only accept cash! Grab your food before you go out tonight, and once you get home, pop your food in the microwave, and eat up!
