Reasons To Adopt and Not Shop
Most of you have heard this catchy phrase, “adopt, don’t shop.” What people don’t seem to understand is that when they buy into this industry of breeding, they’re encouraging animal abuse to the highest degree and lessening the chances of a shelter animal being adopted into a good home. Here are 5 reasons why you need to take this into consideration:
$$$$- The prices! Adopting is cheaper all around because they already have their medical expenses paid from when they were rescued (if any), have a set shot record, and have already been spayed or neutered. Adoption fees vary from shelter to shelter but with a short call or visit to their website, you can catch some deals!
The Reward! Rescued pets have a past and being adopted into a good home will not only strengthen your bond but make you feel ten times better about your decision. About 2.7 million animals are euthanized every year in America so it will definitely make you appreciate your furry companion!
The Specifics! According to BarkPost, 20 to 30 percent of dogs in shelters are purebred. If you want to avoid breeders but absolutely NEED a pure Corgi or Italian Greyhound, make some calls, look online, and even look on Craigslist! Some sites will help you find these dogs and guide you in the right direction! They are everywhere. A pure bred for a way cheaper price? I think that sounds like a good deal.
Puppy fever! Dogs, on average, are 18 months when they enter a shelter and that’s still a good age for a person looking for a young dog
Great behavior! Most adult pets in shelters are already trained so it makes the adopting process a lot easier. They are mild mannered but fun and loving!
If these aren’t enough reasons to adopt and you still want to buy from a breeder, just remember to spay and neuter so that we start putting an end to the overpopulation problem we have in the US. Little by little, pet by pet, I sure hope we reach the end of this course.
