The Entertainment Industry and Its Diversity Issue
A recent study from USC Annenburg School for Communication and Journalism shows that women, minorities, and the LGBT community are excluded from the Hollywood industry. Within the study they focused on 414 films and TV series, and found that only a third of speaking roles were female, 28.3% were minorities, and a whopping 2% were identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
Not that this was at all surprising, but to finally see it in an article from a school that excels in this kind of thing really drives it home for me. I think this clearly shows that we need a change.
Now we know the #OscarsSoWhite backlash was only scratching the surface of a much deeper problem.
