Calling out CatCalls
Women know it all too well. There is almost nothing worse than a strange man shouting just about anything at you with the aim to gain your undivided attention. We have heard it all: sweet cheeks, baby doll, whistling, or even producing sounds you’d only use to get your dog’s attention.
I don’t know about you ladies, but it sets me off! I’ve always wanted to have a snarky whit comeback that will really shock the weirdo. But the fact of the matter is we are usually too tired, scared, or in a hurry to get to wherever we were trying to get to. So I settle with a dramatic eye roll and cursing under my breath. Debi Hasky on other hand has something to say.
Debi Hasky, a Latina artist who grew up in Miami and now lives and studies art in Barcelona has been strongly recognized for her work this past week and I, for one, am a huge fan. The series “Calling out Catcalls” is not only speaking to women all over the world, but has earned Hasky a full scholarship to study graphic design at IED Barcelona. Talk about serious girl power.
The posters are usually in Spanish, but sometimes in English, and the comebacks are just oh so perfect. Sayings like “No soy tu Mamacita” (I’m not your Mommy), “Las mujeres somos Fuertes” (Women are Strong) and “Seduce mi Mente” (Seduce my mind), are featured. We can only hope for possible merchandise soon.
