Questions You Should Ask Before Refusing Syrian Refugees
According to the U.N. Syrians as of now are the largest refugee population in the world, and as most of us know, many are being relocated to other countries. This includes the United States. However 31 state governors here in the U.S refuse to house any refugees, including Texas governor Greg Abbott. Most are opposed for “safety reasons”, a reaction to the recent Paris attacks, although it’s been confirmed that none of the terrorists involved in the tragedy were Syrian. That point aside, the question still remains: Can these people actually REFUSE SYRIAN REFUGEES? The short and sweet answer is NO; we cannot legally oppose new Syrian refugees.
“WHY?” You may ask. Because of the 1951 Refugee Convention where U.S. President Eisenhower signed a United Nations treaty agreeing to the responsibilities of states to grant asylum to refugees. Under the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution treaties become the law of the land when 1) the President signs the treaty and 2) the senate ratifies the treaty.
Both requirements were met making this treaty legally binding, which means that what Greg Abbott and other state governors are doing is both ILLEGAL and UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Annunciation House is an association here in El Paso that accepts and shelters refugees, the homeless, and the poor. However how many they can help is dependent on how much they have to give. So please DONATE, DONATE, and DONATE. Help them take in as many refugees as possible!
