5 Ways to Destress
Here in El Paso Finals week is well on its way for college students. With stress only increasing and anxiety coming into play there is only little to no time to destress. Being in college myself I looked up ways to help myself out and here are the five I found the most helpful and successful.
1) Exercise
Physically active people feel less anxious and depressed. One theory holds that exercise can increase your levels of norepinephrine, a chemical that helps the brain deal with stress more efficiently. We’ve all heard it 30 min a day five times a week, but the exercise does not have to CrossFit guys just take your dog for a walk or something!
2) Music
I am sure we all already use music as an outlet during finals or any stressful time period in our lives, Yet, its actually classical or baroque music that will help you unwind and improve your mood the most. So put Drake on pause and listen to some Bach instead!
3) Chill out on Social Media
How you wake up in the morning can really set the tone for the rest of the day. With that being said checking stressful work emails, or having your ex come out on your news feed just might set you off. Start your day off with something more enjoyable. Also end your day this way too. Turn off your TV cell phones and computers at least an hour before bed time.
4) Herbal Remedies
A glass of tea is super quick and easy to add into your schedule. By strengthening your body’s ability to handle stress, a class of herbs called adaptogens keeps everyday pressure from wreaking havoc on your immune system. Look for adaptogen combos formulas such as bacopa and holy basil. Ginseng is a stress relief herb as well.
5) Do Something Fun
A 2004 study published in the journal of nursing scholarship found that creating artwork and crafts helped to relax a group of adults who were serving as caregivers for family members with cancer. Putting your focus on something completely different can be very stress relieving. If arts and crafts are not your thing pick up whatever is fun for you personally! Remember to laugh and blow off some steam!
