My Top 6 David Bowie Songs
News went viral today of David Bowie’s passing. The influential, eclectic, and even legendary artist died at the age of 69 on January 10th after an 18 month long battle with cancer, just two day after his birthday and the release of his latest album Blackstar.
In honor of Mr. Bowie, here are what I consider to be some of his best songs. In no particular order:
1) Space Oddity
Released in 1969 as the opening track to the self-titled album David Bowie (later Space Oddity), starring the launch into space of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut.
2) Young Americans
Off the album Young Americans, released in 1975.
3) Fame
Also off the album Young Americans, and co-written by John Lennon. This song is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shape Rock and Roll.
4) The Man Who Sold the World
Released in 1970 and the title track of Bowie’s third album. This song has been covered by a number of artists, most notably Lulu in 1974 and Nirvana in 1993.
5) Golden Years
First released in it’s shortened from in 1976 as a single and then as a full length version the following year on the album Station to Station.
6) Ashes to Ashes
Released in 1980 and off the album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), the lyrics revisit Bowie’s Major Tom character from Space Oddity.
