Doomsday Clock: Three Minutes to Midnight
If it wasn’t clear that the earth and mankind were in deep trouble before, then it sure is now. News was expressed yesterday, January 26th, that the Doomsday Clock stands at 3 minutes to midnight.
The closest it’s been to midnight since 1984.
The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, representing a countdown to possible global catastrophe. The closer the Clock is set to midnight, the closer scientists believe the world is to global disaster.
The Doomsday Clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists who say it is “An internationally recognized design that conveys how close we are to destroying our civilization with dangerous technologies of our own making. First and foremost among these are nuclear weapons, but the dangers include climate-changing technologies, emerging biotechnologies, and cybertechnology that could inflict irrevocable harm, whether by intention, miscalculation, or by accident, to our way of life and to the planet.”
The Clock hasn’t changed since last year, where it was reported to also be at three minutes to midnight. Luckily many world leaders are starting to make changes to reverse the Clock. Recent attempts such as the peace deal between Iran and the United States and progress made at the Paris Climate Change Summit will also be taken into account in the calculations, but it’s hard to say if and how much of a positive affect that these actions will bring.
