V-Day in El Paso
Although we all associate V-Day to Valentine's Day, I am wondering if you all are aware of the fact that V-Day is a day started by Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues) as a day to End Violence Against Women. February is a big month for feminism as it's a month (for me in particular) to really make a stand against Violence Against Women. Hence, why I start February Face Off. What does image and beauty standards have to do with Violence Against Women? Well, it may surprise quite a few of you that many women do not value themselves. Many who are victims of domestic violence, sex slavery, and abuse feel they deserve it, for the mere fact that they are women.
Well, with February Face Off, it pushes for girls and women to value themselves and understand that they are worthy of the world. But I digress!
This week, I push for Domestic Violence Awareness and I challenge my girls who are taking the February Face Off Challenge to push it even further, and give themselves a "black eye" or "bruises" or "busted lips." All of these things women cover up when it comes from a significant other, and that's why the rates of domestic violence are so high. By bringing it to light and giving it a face, we're bringing the discussion forward from behind closed doors.
We live in a nation where whatever happens in your home we have to respect and mind our business. But what if you hear screaming? What if you hear a woman being thrown across a room? Unfortunately, many people's initial reaction is to ignore and mind their business. And that attitude needs to end.
I have always been thrilled to participate in V-Day activities, even if it's just discussing domestic violence with my students. Luckily, I'm here to tell you some of the great things you can do yourself to honore V-Day!
1. Talk About Violence Against Women
When you go out with your boo for a Valentine's Dinner and are sitting in awkward silence, I say fuck it! Bring up some of these major issues. Bring up the fact that 1 in 3 women worldwide will experience physical or sexual abuse from an intimate lover. Bring up the fact that 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner! It's already awkward! Might as well inform. Okay maybe not during dinner, but any opportunity or chance you get to bring people awareness is a chance of a lifetime, literally! So take advantage!
2. Attend The V-Day Production: TONANTZIN Rising
