What caught my attention at the Grammy’s
Recently the band Little Big Town won an award for best country duo and group performance for their song, ‘Girl Crush’.
The song had originally received a lot of negative attention for suggesting lesbian activity but big plot twist, the song didn’t actually pass the Bechdel test. The Bechdel test, named after Allison Bechdel, is when “two women talk to each other about something other than a man.”
What upsets me is that the song was only controversial when it was about a “girl crush” but oh no guys, now it’s okay because after all, it was about a man. The song had originally been pulled from the radio because of the amount of complaints that were being received and became quite controversial due to the title and the expressions used to describe this girl.
If one listens closely, you can see that it’s not about a girl, really, but about a man and why she wants to be like the other woman. I’m not saying the song didn’t deserve an award but the fact that Ryan Seacrest had to mention that the song was special on behalf of its bold move to be about “lesbians” blows my mind because it wasn’t really about that. It wasn’t bold. And if you ask me, I’m tired of people mocking sexual orientations as an idea to make their songs come up like Katy Perry’s, “I Kissed a Girl.”
What do you guys think? I want to get different perspective on this!
